This film was made as part of my diploma year at the Poudrière school. We had one year to create a 4-minute animated film on the theme of our choice. In recent years, thoughts on the place of women in Western society have come to the fore, giving me the opportunity to explore issues that have always bothered me: gender injunctions. As a man, I’ve often found it difficult to express myself and show my vulnerability to others without being mocked or misunderstood. With this project, I wanted to create a moment of expression and disinhibition between men.
Ce film a été réalisé dans le cadre de mon année diplômante à l’école de la Poudrière. Nous avions une année pour réaliser un film d’animation de 4 minutes sur le thème de notre choix. Ces dernières années, les réflexions sur la place des femmes dans la société occidentale sont revenues sur le devant de la scène et m’ont permis de découvrir des champs de réflexion sur des questions qui m’ont toujours parcourues: les injonctions liées aux genres. En tant qu’homme, j’ai souvent observé qu’il était difficile de s’exprimer et de se montrer vulnérable entre nous sans être moqué ou incompris. Avec ce projet, j’ai voulu créer un moment d’expression et de désinhibition entre hommes.
Some research sketches
To tell this story, I was looking for a place that would bring men together. Public toilets, with their gendered distinction, allowed me to portray a world of men, but also to play with the particularity of this place, which oscillates between intimacy and proximity.
Pour raconter cette histoire, je cherchais un lieu qui regroupe les hommes entre eux. Les toilettes publiques, de part leur distinction genrée, me permet de mettre en situation un monde d’hommes mais aussi de jouer avec la particularité de ce lieu qui oscille entre intimité et proximité.
As a big fan of musicals, the project of making one had been in my head for several years. With this film it was the perfect opportunity because the singing, music and dancing made it possible to uninhibit the characters in my film and therefore to create a real moment of expression while keeping lightness and humor in the tone. . I was inspired by the graphic compositions of choreographer Busby Berkeley and the efficiency and simplicity of the staging of the film “Bout en train” by Emilie Sengelin who was the godmother of this film.
En tant que grand amateur de comédies musicales, ça faisait plusieurs années que le projet d’en faire une me trottait dans la tête. Avec ce film ce fut l’occasion parfaite car le chant, la musique et la danse permettaient de désinhiber les personnages de mon film et donc de créer un véritable moment d’expression tout en gardant de la légèreté et de l’humour dans le ton. Je me suis inspiré des compositions graphiques du chorégraphe Busby Berkeley et de l’efficacité et la simplicité de la mise en scène du film “Bout en train” de Emilie Sengelin qui a été la marraine de ce film.
From writing the lyrics to the final mix, creating the music took as long as designing the images. It was the first time I’d invested so much time in this part of a film. I decided to work on it beforehand by making sound models at the same time as the storyboard and I quickly got in touch with Alexis Pécharman so that I could go back and forth several times and test different intentions. My main inspiration was the work of Michel Legrand in Jacques Demy’s musical films, and I wanted something melodious close to the sung/spoken style found in his films.
De l’écriture des paroles au mixage final, la création musicale s’est étalée sur autant de temps que la conception des images. C’était la première fois que je m’investissais autant dans cette partie d’un film. J’ai décidé de la travailler en amont en faisant des maquettes sonores en même temps que le storyboard et j’ai rapidement pris contact avec Alexis Pécharman pour pouvoir faire plusieurs aller-retours et tester différentes intentions. Ma principale inspiration a été le travail de Michel Legrand dans les fims musicaux de Jacques Demy, je voulais quelque chose de mélodieux proche du chanté/parlé que l’on retrouve dans ses films.
